Lucky Hand Fun Fly 2012

Fun in the sunshine

Salem, Ore., July 7, 2012

By Mike Hazel

Warm weather greeted the participants at this annual event held at the Bill Riegel Model Airpark. The event was hosted by the Western Oregon Control Line Flyers, with fliers attending from Portland to Roseburg and points inbetween.  There were fifteen pilots who signed up to participate in the poker draw, and another half dozen or so who showed up to just watch or fly on their own.

As usual, a variety of planes were in the air, with sometimes three circles going at once.  Most planes were of the stunt and sport type,  but some combat planes were also flown and even a couple of scale birds for good measure.  Mishaps (aka unplanned ground contact) were kept to a reasonable minimum.

This year the cash winner was John Thompson of Eugene, Ore., who came away 75 bucks richer.  Merchandise prizes for the second and third best hands went to Mark Hansen of Portland, Ore., and Ron Anderson of Vancouver, Wash.  Everyone seemed to have a real good time, so look forward to seeing this event again next year.

Participants included Ron Anderson, Craig Bartlett, Pete Benning, Floyd Carter, Bob Cooke, Dave Denison, Don Dotter, Richard Entwhistle, Mark Hansen, Mike Hazel, Bruce Hunt, Doug Knoyle, Bob Lewis, Dave Mitchell, Jerry Olson, Gene Pape, Dave Royer, Dave Shrum, John Thompson and Bruce Tunberg,
