Oregon Flying Fun -- 1

Fun-fly series under way

Jan. 1, 2007, Portland, Ore.

It turned out to be more of a "lunch munch" for the several fliers who showed up for the New Years Day fun fly at East Delta Park in Portland. It was man vs. weather, and weather pretty much won out.

Organizer Mark Hansen reports that a few fliers showed up by 10 a.m., but hindered by rain, cold, and other problems, only a few flights were put in. By noon, the soaked group decided to adjourn to a nearby restaurant for the rest of the 10 a.m.-3 p.m. event. Among those putting up fligths were Mark Hansen, Art Zehner and Doug Powers.

The late-arriving Nitroholics team arrived from down the Willamette Valley just after the first group left. Since it was pouring rain, the team adjourned to a different nearby restaurant, had lunch and then, since the weather had cleared, returned to put up a few flights before heading home at 3 p.m.

It was mostly a washout, but several fliers at least were able to say they got in their first flights of 2007. And getting the handle in hand certainly does pump up the the enthusiasm for more flying -- when weather permits!

The second in the series of four Oregon fun flies is scheduled for 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Eugene Airport in Eugene, Ore. See Where the Action Is for details.

Photos: Rainy weather never permitted the cameras to come out during the morning of the Portland fun-fly, but it cleared up long enough for a couple of snapshots in the afternoon.
