A highlight of the Northwest Speed & Racing Championships was to see a couple of young fliers participating. Scooter (left) and Jonathan Reid flew Class I Mouse racers, with Mike Hazel coaching. Flying Lines phioto.

Northwest Speed & Racing Championships

June 27-28-29, 2014, Bill Riegel Model Airpark, Salem, Ore.

By Mike Hazel, contest director

Like so many Northwest contest during the “first half” of the year we had some gloomy weather forecasts. Friday morning contestants were met with some showers and a bit of wind.  A little later in the day it slightly subsided and the speed flying got underway.  Saturday was  better and by Sunday it was  wonderful.

This contest was the replacement for the speed and racing events that would have been held at the traditional Northwest Regionals meet, presently in limbo.  The meet was sponsored by the Salem-based Western Oregon Control Line Flyers.

Friday and Saturday action consisted of the speed events, which had a modest entry level.  As usual, the 1/2 A Proto and Sport Jet events were the most popular, along with the new NW B Proto class.

On Sunday action switched to the racing events.  Turnout was a bit disappointing with a couple of the regulars counting as no-shows.  Highlight of the racing activity was the appearance of the Reid family with a couple of brand new mouse racers and two budding-new young control line pilots.  Plenty of coaching and information was offered in helping them in their endeavor.  Being still slightly short of experience for big-time racing pilot action it was opted to just run solo races.

All in all, a good time had by all.
