2016 Northwest Speed Championships

Sept. 10-11, Bill Riegel Model Airpark, Salem, Ore.

By Mike Hazel, contest director

This year’s end-of-speed-season meet was a good success.  Good turnout and good weather, although it was a bit warm on Saturday.  There were a total of 11 speedsters who showed up to make noise and go fast.  With a small handful of others who were not able to attend, it looks like Northwest speed activity is still making a good showing.

This was the first event held at the Bill Riegel Model Airpark (Salem airport) since an extensive road project adjacent has gotten underway.  Pit and parking areas were reconfigured, but worked out OK.

Individual event results are listed below, but there were also trophies given out to reward best record ratio performances in both AMA and Northwest events.  There was also $210 given out in a “flying raffle,” which consisted of each official flight getting a chance in the draw.  First through third winners respectively in that were:  John Knoppi, Ken Burdick, and Dean Singleton.

Top flights of the day included Jim Booker’s excellent 175+ run in F2A, and Chris “the partner” Sackett blasted his own record in NW B Proto with a 112+ romp.
