Bod Busters set new world record!

By Ken Burdick

Yes Folks, its true,

After a humiliating loss to the Beaver State Combat Team recently at the Bladdder Grabber, your friendly neighborhood Bod Busters turned on each other, breaking a new speed record.

The lone pair of Bod Busters made the drive to Salem, Ore., on Saturday morning, engaged in conversation, we yakked right past our breakfast stop in Centralia (Country Cousin) and wound up in Chehalis old town at a good local café. We arrived at the speed meet somewhere around 11 am. The usual speed activity was taking place and it looked more like a swap meet than a speed contest. Someone said that it's the slowest event in AMA ... they are right, just a handful of flights were flown besides the ones that Don and I put in. We flew six between us which may have inspired some activity.

Greg Beers and clan made the 15 hr drive from Montana and we spent some time catching up together. Greg had once lived in Vancouver, Wash., flying combat and racing events, I remember him at the Regionals and CLAMbash contests. Don and I put his wife Laura to work starting for us. Laura flew her .21 proto and best of all brought homemade fudge for an addition to the lunch! It was some of the best this side of Montana.

We only stayed for Saturday but had a pretty good time.

New record!

It was none other than Don McKay "The Combat Monster" Who put together a good strong run in F2D proto speed pushing up the standing start to 103+ mph! The previous record was held by Kenny-B of the Bod Busters at a modest 97.41. Don claims his best unofficial has been 108 mph! If you have ever tried to get any sort of Proto-Speed to run fast you'll appreciate the difficulty.

Kenny-B met the challenge with a blistering 96 mph answer to the new record.lame? you bet it was lame. Out came all sorts of secret goodies that further reduced the speed to 93.

Ohmygosh!

The speeds for this event should be getting closer to the top speeds in 1/2A Proto and seem to be going that way.

Both the Combat Monster's ship and Kenny-B's ship entertained the herd of speed flyers (see photo) with 1/2- lap torque rolls before getting to the end of the lines, putting up official flights. Kind of keeps you on your toes when you can read the outboard wing!

I guess it's time to put the hammer down and push the record up another notch! You read it here first, "This aggression won't stand, man" (Jeff Bridges~The Big Lebowski).

The rest of the speedy Bod Busters are on the chase for a new world record. We could use some help from the so called "experts" so anyone who cares to step up and build an A-dragster is more than welcome to bump us off the mark.

Congratulations, Don.

Thanks to Mike Hazel and others for putting on the contest. Lunch was great.
